What is Reformed Theology?

Reformed theology is not a novel invention; it is simply a recovery of the historic, biblical Christian faith. Tracing its roots back to the 16th-century Protestant Reformation led by figures such as John Calvin, Martin Luther, and John Knox, Reformed theology is characterized by a profound sense of the majesty and sovereignty of God over all creation, history, and salvation.

At its core, Reformed theology is defined by the “Five Solas” of the Reformation, which serve as foundational pillars for our understanding of the gospel:

• Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone): The Bible alone is the final authority for everything we believe and practice. It is God’s completely trustworthy revelation to humanity.
• Sola Gratia (Grace Alone): Sinners are saved from the righteous judgment of God purely by His unmerited favor and sovereign grace, completely apart from any human merit, works, or choices.
• Sola Fide (Faith Alone): The righteousness of Jesus Christ is credited to us through faith alone. We are justified not by what we do, but by trusting entirely in the finished work of Christ.
• Solus Christus (Christ Alone): Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man. Salvation is found in His substitutionary life, death, and resurrection alone.
• Soli Deo Gloria (To God Alone be the Glory): Because God is the author and perfecter of our salvation from beginning to end, all honor, praise, and glory belong to Him alone.

Furthermore, Reformed theology highlights the beauty of God’s covenantal dealings with mankind, showing how the Old and New Testaments form a unified story of redemption centered on Jesus Christ. We recognize that God is actively working in history to gather a people for Himself, renewing hearts and transforming lives to live out His kingdom purposes today.
